In een recent project is bovenstaande driedeling in ambities ontwikkeld en uitgewerkt. Vanwege de nodige vragen hierover, is er een korte toelichting geschreven.

For some time a few universities work together under iiSBE umbrella in developing master courses in Sustainable Built Environment. The key universities are UMinho, based in Guimaraes Portugal, and Czech Technical University in Prague. Others are associated or affiliated to this process. A major enabler was a EU program I coordinated called Ides-Edu , in which 15 universities joined forces in developing course material. and iiSBE ,with many academic members, as the independent NGO partner for Sustainable Building,
During the SBE16 Conference in Prague, CESB16 , we have taken initiatives to broaden this cooperation, Ways of cooperation were discussed , as well as a detailed exploration of getting involved with a few interested universities. Some had expressed interest during my visits , and were represented by a professional in student and teacher exchange organisation . ( interested universities came from Ukraine , Ireland and Australia). In the next months the structure of cooperation will be further explored and detailed. Interested universities can of course bring forward their interest , via me ( as advisor for master course development) or the coordinator of the running joint masters, Luis Braganca from Portugal.

Some time ago I was invited to present on a national conference about sustainable urban area development, by Urgenda.
The video of that presentation is still on line, and can be found in the link below. The slides are not visible, but can be downloaded in the second link, to open parallel to the video. The presentation however is in Dutch. And I should mark here as well, 2,5 years later,, that some of the initiatives mentioned in the end discussion have been delayed or canceled. Transition remains a difficult process with many interests conflicting. On the other side, a large national project has started to retrofit houses for 0-energy ( in the social housing sector , see the paper below) and a biobased material strategy is gaining ground .

Scotland has the same task as any other country: to reduce CO2 emissions , while housing a growing amount of people at the same time. In a meeting of social housing corporations from the “Highlands and Islands” in Aviemore, I could chair a session to discuss options how to speed up the retrofit of Scottish houses, and at the same time introduce 0- energy concepts, for both new and old houses. Based on the Dutch experience so far, and first initiatives around other countries in Europe. It was a highly motivated meeting, and will have a follow up in finding the right approach for the Scottish situation.
The island Eigg in Scotland develops their own renewable energy grid. Master Thesis Students in Dundee University Scotland, explore and design houses for that island that fit in that Renewable energy grid, in a way that it makes the grid more stable in operation. At the same time using vernacular architecture examples, and local resources to materialize the designs. In a workshop with the students current concept designs were evaluated. A very interesting approach, and the island situation makes the challenges very clear. The more since the islanders inhabitants bought back their land , and developed a trust to create a sustainable community !
